Lille vs. Liverpool

Lille - Liverpool

Defeat against Wigan on Monday has cast further doubts on our Champions League chances for next season, which might mean we'll have to settle for Europa League football again! This isn't something we want, or can really afford to be seeing, however our continued participation in this season EL sees us go to Lille on Thursday for the first leg of our last 16 tie.

Lille Team News:

A broken rib will mean that Mathieu Debuchy misses out for Lille.

Player to watch: Gervinho

Yao Gervinho is Lille's top goalscorer and his reputation throughout European football is growing all the time. The Ivory Coast international has a dangerous partnership with Pierre Alain Frau growing as well.

Liverpool Team News:

Injuries mean that Fabio Aurelio and Martin Skrtel are both missing again however Daniel Agger could return. Maxi Rodriguez is ineligible so misses out and Yossi Benayoun will require a fitness test.

Player to watch: Torres

Fernando Torres isn't often criticised however the Spaniard had a poor game against Wigan and was guilty of some woeful finishing, which is unlike him. You'll not often get two bad matches running from Nando!

Match Facts & Stats

The Reds' last five matches:
Liverpool 1-0 Unirea Urziceni
Man City 0-0 Liverpool
Unirea Urziceni 1-3 Liverpool
Liverpool 2-1 Blackburn
Wigan 1-0 Liverpool

Lille's last five matches:
Lille 2-1 Fenerbache
Rennes 1-2 Lille
Fenerbache 1-1 Lille
Lille 1-2 Auxerre
Saint Etienne 1-1 Lille

Ref Watch:

Claus Bo Larsen (Denmark) will officiate.

Match Prediction:

Lille have a brilliant home record in recent European competition having lost only 1 of their last 16 home European matches, this came against ManU in the Champions League. This is going to be a very tough match, coming away with a draw and ideally an away goal would be something so my prediction would be Lille 1 Liverpool 1.

Next Fixtures:

Home to Portsmouth in the Premier League on Monday.

This is going to be one of our toughest matches of the season, so going into this having lost to Wigan isn't going to help. We've got to come back for the second leg all square, an away goal (or two) could be crucial.

Lille can certainly score, but they've not kept too many clean sheets, of late. I could definitely see a couple of away goals for Liverpool in this one.

Well, unless the players and Rafa have done a lot of soul searching during the last few days, I really cannot see us imrpoving on the Wigan score... C'mon Redmen, prove me wrong!!!

Isnt gervinho injured? or am I misinformed?

quiet again.

Haha DubaiSpur - I wouldn't even want Tottenham to fall out of the premier league, it's too much fun finishing above you every year ;)
FuiKaka
Wouldn't relegation mean you finish above us anyway? I merely ask. :)
