Liverpool: Reds Loan Grujic To Cardiff

Liverpool: Reds Loan Grujic To Cardiff

Serbian midfielder joins the Championship high-flyers until the end of the season...

The January transfer window is now over half way through and in addition to a couple of high-profile transfers - Virgil van Dijk coming in and Philippe Coutinho going out - Liverpool have been busy sending a host of youngsters out on loan.

The list of temporary outgoings, which already featured the likes of Ryan Kent (Bristol City), Matty Virtue (Notts County) and Corey Whelan (Yeovil Town), extended on Wednesday to include the notable name of Marko Grujić.

The 21-year-old had long been a candidate for a January move in order to gain further first team experience, although the recent departure of Coutinho to Barcelona had raised the prospect of him being retained by the Reds as attacking midfield cover.

A statement on the official website confirmed: "Marko Grujić has joined Cardiff City on loan until the end of the season, subject to international clearance.

"The Serbian midfielder will continue his development in south Wales as part of a squad that currently sits third in the Championship and faces an FA Cup fourth-round tie with Manchester City later this month."

Big things are expected of Grujić, who arrived at Anfield last summer for around £5million from Red Star Belgrade.

The full international made eight appearances during his debut campaign on Merseyside and a further six have followed in the first half of the current season.

Discussing the move with Mozzartsport, Grujić revealed that he views the switch as a great opportunity to prove his worth to Liverpool manager J├╝rgen Klopp and repay the German for aiding his development to this point.

"This is perhaps the breakthrough moment of my career," remarked the 2015 U20 World Cup winner. "I know that I've been given a great chance to play for the next six months in a big club. Thanks to Mr Klopp for all he has done for me.

"He has been encouraging me for so many months. I hope to help Cardiff win promotion to the Premier League."

According to the Liverpool ECHO, Cardiff were handpicked by Klopp in preference to interest from elsewhere, including Premier League duo Huddersfield Town and West Ham United.

Grujić could make his debut for Neil Warnock's side away to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Vital Comment
We're a bit surprised to see both Kent and Grujić allowed to leave as either could have provided a useful attacking option from midfield in the coming months. However, unless there are injuries, neither would be likely to feature regularly, certainly not away from the FA Cup, so the decision to loan them out is certainly in the interest of their individual progression. The departures, coupled with the possible exit of Daniel Sturridge, also raise the possibility of further attacking incomings at Anfield this month. If that doesn't happen, Ben Woodburn's proposed loan to Sunderland is unlikely to be allowed to go through.
