Liverpool: The Weekly LFC News Update (17/01/2018)

A selection of Liverpool Football Club-related stories and titbits you may have missed over the past seven days...

Liverpool's brilliant 4-3 victory over Manchester City on Sunday included another eye-catching performance from left-back Andrew Robertson, and his efforts were recognised by the Anfield faithful, who sang the Scottish international's name. Reflecting on the significant moment to, Robertson said: "Just after we scored the fourth, I'd won a couple of tackles and to hear them sing your name it's always nice, especially [from] the Kop, the noise they make. It started getting going and it gives you goosebumps; I can't thank them enough for the support they've shown me from day one. When people come to Anfield, you know what the atmosphere's going to be like and I thought today was the best I've played in."

The game was preceded by an emotional minutes applause for legendary former Kop keeper Tommy Lawrence, who sadly passed away last week at the age of 77. 'The Flying Pig', as he was affectionately known, won three major trophies and made 390 appearances for the club during the 1960s and early 1970s

Liverpool's FA Cup fourth-round tie with West Bromwich Albion at Anfield has been confirmed as a 7.45pm GMT kick-off on Saturday January 27. The fixture will be shown live in the UK on BT Sport.

As speculated in last week's Weekly LFC News Update, winger Ryan Kent's return to the Reds was a short one. Just days after his loan move to Freiburg was cancelled by mutual agreement, the Academy graduate moved to Championship outfit Bristol City until the end of the season.

As part of a wide-ranging interview with the official website, Brazilian star Roberto Firmino has discussed his role as Liverpool's main forward. "I wasn't a striker before," comments the 26-year-old. "But as I've been adapting into this position I've liked it more and more. I feel really comfortable and really adapted to it. I'd like to continue playing there for the rest of my career... I'm always very happy to score and to give assists, give passes - that's also hugely important. I work hard and I want to help my teammates. It's not always the goal itself, though the goal is the fruit of the work we've done which is why of course when I score, it's always good."

Mohamed Salah has won a fourth Standard Chartered Player of the Month award in just five months at Liverpool, winning December's official fan vote. The No.11 scored six goals in eight appearances last month.

Former Liverpool great Kevin Keegan has sung the praises of current Reds boss Jürgen Klopp. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, the European Cup winning striker said: "I think Jürgen fits like a glove; He gets the Liverpool humour, he gets what the fans want. The fans enjoy watching him kick every ball. You feel like he's going to tackle someone running down the line at times! He comes with a great track record, You can't argue with what he achieved at Dortmund. I enjoy watching this Liverpool team. What people have to understand is that if your best players are inventive and Liverpool's are then your strengths are at the front. Liverpool's weaknesses are at the back. You have to play to your strengths. Liverpool have to go and attack, and hope they outscore teams."

Liverpool U23s lost 3-2 at Manchester City in Premier League 2 action on Friday night. A Harry Wilson penalty had given the visitors the lead but they found themselves 3-1 down before a late Toni Gomes strike set up a tense finish. Despite the reversal, the U23s remain one point clear of Leicester City at the top of the standings. LFC U23s: Grabara, Parker (Jones), Masterson, Johnston, Juanma, Kane, Alves, Wilson, Dhanda (Gomes), Adekanye, Brewster (Millar).

The defeat was compounded by an injury to starlet Rhian Brewster. The 17-year-old forward suffered a heavy fall during the match and left the field on a stretcher. An initial diagnosis of ligament damage has followed but Brewster will undergo further tests this week to determine the full extent of his injury. Brewster has been an important player for Neil Critchley's U23s this season, as well as the club's U19s in the UEFA Youth League.

Critchley's side were without midfield duo Matty Virtue and Cameron Brannagan after they completed departures from the club. 20-year-old Virtue has joined Notts County on loan until the end of the season, while Brannagan, 21, has signed for Oxford United in a permanent transfer.

Liverpool U18s' unbeaten domestic season come to a chastening end last Wednesday when Tottenham Hotspur defeated them 4-0 in the Premier League Cup quarter-finals at Hotspur Way. The off-colour youngsters went down to a Rodel Richards double and goals from Reo Griffiths and Dilan Markanday. LFC U18s: Jaros, Larouci (Glatzel), Lewis, R Williams, Boyes, Clayton (N Williams), Tagseth, Dixon-Bonner, Millar, Jones, Camacho (Longstaff).
