Liverpool: Besieged Burnley Hold Firm For Anfield Point

Liverpool: Besieged Burnley Hold Firm For Anfield Point

Hosts frustrated on another afternoon when their efforts were undermined by wayward finishing and misfortune...

For the second time in four days, and the umpteenth time in the past few seasons, Liverpool, for whom Philippe Coutinho made his first start of the season, failed to turn unequivocal dominance into a deserved three points.

Their 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday afternoon, in which the standout performer Mohamed Salah cancelled out Scott Arfield's surprise opener on the half hour mark, featured 71% possession for the hosts and a mammoth 35 attempts at goal compared to five from the away side.

Jürgen Klopp's men, who went close to a late winner when substitute Dominic Solanke struck the woodwork, were also unlucky not to be awarded a penalty for a foul on Salah by Ben Mee.

Burnley were continually indebted to a stellar performance from stand-in goalkeeper Nick Pope but it was Liverpool's profligacy in front of goal that most helped them leave L4 with their first points since September 1974.

On another occasion the Clarets might even have snatched an unfathomable victory as Mee twice went close with headers from corners in the final 10 minutes.

Summarising the one-sided encounter, Klopp, who made seven changes from Wednesday's 2-2 Champions League draw with Sevilla, admitted the outcome had upset him.

"It feels strange," commented the German at his post-match press conference. "It feels wrong, but it's a fact - we drew.

"A lot of the parts of the game I was really happy with. We made seven changes but it was still really fluent, it looked like proper football - offensive football, dominant football, possession football how it should be.

"We created moments. You cannot create in each situation a finishing situation, but we did it absolutely often enough. It could have been more often, of course, because with one better decision here or there then we would have had a few more...

"[We were] unlucky, I would say, in and around the penalty situation. For me, it's a penalty, I cannot change this even when I saw the pictures back after the game. We still had the chance to score but unfortunately we hit the crossbar.

"Obviously fortune didn't wear a Liverpool shirt today. I don't want to ignore that they had two headers at the end of the game; that would have been typical a little bit for us if they would have scored in these situations."

Liverpool remain eighth in the standings, below their opponents on goal difference, ahead of Sunday's fixtures.

The Merseysiders are next in action on Tuesday night when they visit Leicester City for a League Cup tie.
