Liverpool: Ref Watch 17/18 - Arsenal (Home)

The lowdown on the man in the middle for Liverpool's hosting of Arsenal on Sunday...

The Premier League has announced the officiating teams who will be taking charge of top-flight fixtures during Matchweek 3 of 2017/18 season.

The players of Liverpool and Arsenal, who meet at Anfield for a 4.00pm BST kick-off on Sunday, August 27, will be joined on the pitch by referee Martin Atkinson.

Stephen Child and Adam Nunn are his designated assistants, while Craig Pawson will be patrolling the technical areas in the role of fourth official.

In his two previous games this season Atkinson has produced a combined five yellow cards and one red.

Liverpool encountered the 46-year-old on three occasions during 2016/17, winning two and losing the other.

In addition to a 2-1 away victory over would-be champions Chelsea back in September (two yellow cards shown, one to Liverpool), Atkinson presided over the 3-0 final day defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield that secured the Reds a top four finish (one yellow card shown, none to Liverpool).

Arsenal had a 50/50 record of two wins and two defeats from their 2016/17 encounters with the Euro 2016 official; beating West Ham United and Sunderland but suffering defeats to Chelsea and Manchester City.

Overall, in his 43 matches refereed last term, the Bradford native handed out a total of 146 yellow cards and three red.

His yellow card average finished at 3.39-per-game, with a red card shown every 14.33 matches.

Atkinson is associated with the
West Riding County Football Association and he has been part of the Select Group of Premier League referees since 2005.

He was promoted to FIFA's list for European and International matches a year later.

With a few exceptions I never mind who the ref and his assistants ( linesmen ) are.So long as the ref reads the game correctly, remains completely impartial and does not get card happy, allows the game to flow then fine, this ref and his assistants will do fine.......
