Liverpool: Stats Preview 17/18 - Watford (Away)

A selection of the key facts, figures and statistics ahead of Liverpool's first 2017/18 Premier League fixture at Watford...

Ahead of competitive games involving Liverpool FC, as in previous seasons, we'll be trawling the record books to bring you all the facts, figures and statistics you need to know.

This week the Reds begin their 2017/18 campaign with a tricky-looking trip to a Watford side who will have a new manager and a host of new players on show after a busy summer at Vicarage Road.

Here's what caught our eye:

• Liverpool and Watford have contested 28 competitive matches during their respective histories with Liverpool leading overall courtesy of 20 wins to 5 defeats and 3 draws (source: 11v11.com).

• Two of Watford's five successes have come in the Premier League with the most recent taking place at Vicarage Road two seasons ago when Odion Ighalo scored twice in a 3-0 win.

• The chastening afternoon for Liverpool, which took place in December 2015, still stands as Jürgen Klopp's heaviest defeat since taking charge at Anfield.

• Since then however, the Hornets have lost three in a row to Liverpool with an aggregate scoreline of 1-9 in Liverpool's favour.

Emre Can scored the only goal in the corresponding fixture last season and the spectacular overhead kick was subsequently voted the Premier League's Goal of the Season, an award which he was presented with at Melwood earlier this week.

• Liverpool's 6-1 win in the reverse fixture at Anfield last term represented their most goals scored in a league game during 2016/17 and a joint highest winning margin of the season.

• The Reds have won each of their last four opening day Premier League matches, after failing to win any of the previous four.

• Watford are unbeaten in their last 10 opening day league games (W5, D5) since losing six in a row between 2001 and 2006.

• New Watford boss Marco Silva lost his last two home games as Hull City manager last term, including a 1-7 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on the final day.

• Liverpool won their last three 2016/17 Premier League away games without conceding a goal - they last managed four in succession between January and March 2002.
