Three Issues Klopp Must Fix Before The PL Curtain Raiser

Submitted article, Three issues Klopp must fix before their Premier League curtain raise:

As the top Premier League sides travel the world in pre-season facing their counterparts from across the globe we`re slowly but surely, continent by continent, meandering our way towards the first weekend of the new season.

With less than a month to go until the new season gets underway, most of the top six are almost done in terms of summer business, with a dominant title win akin to that of Chelsea`s last year looking exceptionally unlikely.

The top three title favourites have tied down the majority of their key signing with messrs Lukaku, Morata and Silva having joined Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City, respectively.

Arsenal have also started well, adding left-back Saed Kolasinac on a free transfer before breaking their club-record fee to bring in marquee striker Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon. However, whatever side of the spending debate you sit on - whether clubs should be spending big regardless or be slow and subtle about it - many were expecting more movement from both Liverpool and Tottenham.

Unlike last season`s runners up, the Reds have at least added a few names. Former Chelsea youngster Dominic Solanke arrived after running his contract down in west London, while another former Blue in Mohamed Salah was brought in from Roma before Hull City`s Andrew Robertson joined at left-back.

With three in the door already and no big names out of it Jurgen Klopp could be in a far worse position. That said, there are still some issues the German must attend to before their season opener at Watford.

At the back

It`s well documented just how poor the Reds were defensively last season. For as much as they were one of the most potent striking forces they, time and again, let themselves down at the back.

It`s something Klopp needs to seriously look at and, with Southampton`s Virgil van Dijk now 2/9 with Bet Way (dates as of 25th July, 2017) to be at Anfield come the close of the summer window, it looks as if they`re working towards solving the problem.

However, while the Dutchman would be an outstanding addition, there is more work to be done on that back four.

Robertson has secured his move to Merseyside this summer, however, it can`t stop there. Given just how unpopular Moreno is at the club, and with the strain of the Champions League back next season, quality depth is needed meaning just the one left-back will not do.

Central conundrum

Liverpool icon Lucas Leiva has now left for Lazio and although his departure will not trouble Klopp, he has another problem to face in the middle.

In Jordan Hernderson and Emre Can he has two very talented players, worthy of a starting spot - however, they`re far too similar.

A good midfield works when you have at least two players who complement each other in their styles of play, with one sitting deep and acting as a pivot allowing the other to go on and create for those playing in the front line.

With the England international alongside the German there is no one in the centre happy to sit deep and either pull the strings when going forward or offer cover for that already leaky defence.

RB Leipzig`s Naby Keita is a top target, however, with the Bundesliga side standing firm Klopp and the powers that be at Anfield must be ready to go out and find another target, and quickly, if needs be.

Striking solution

Roberto Firmino had an outstanding season last time out, starting the majority of his Premier League games leading the line for Klopp, scoring 11 goals and picking up another seven assists according to whoscored.com.

However, while the Brazilian impressed in the role last term he is by no means an out and out striker. If the Reds want to continue their progression under the former Borussia Dortmund boss, both in the league and on the continent, then they`ll need to find someone who can make that role their own.

Daniel Sturridge would seem the obvious option in the squad, however it would seem his reluctance to fit into Klopp`s system, coupled with his torrid injury record, have put an end to his chances of making a return to the top at Anfield.

Waiting in the wings is talented Belgian striker Divock Origi, who made 14 starts in the league last season, though his return of just seven goals leaves question marks over his ability to be the man to lead the line.

Firmino is more than capable of beating his goalscoring record in the new season, however, if they want to really take it to the rest of the top six, another signing may be needed.
