Liverpool: Electric LFC Defeat Mighty Bayern

The Reds produce a wonderful performance to record a 3-0 win over hosts Bayern Munich at the Audi Cup...

Liverpool overcome the might of Bayern Munich and the elements to kick-off their Audi Cup campaign with an impressive 3-0 victory over Carlo Ancelotti's side at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night.

Played against the backdrop of a phenomenal thunderstorm, the outing represented a big step-up in the Merseysiders' pre-season preparations.

Jürgen Klopp's men were more than up to the task however and they took a 7th minute lead as Roberto Firmino ran from deep before slipping-through Sadio Mané, who angled a shot past home goalie Sven Ulreich.

For all Bayern's possession Liverpool carried the greater goal threat throughout the first half with one particular counter needing Ulreich to produce a fine diving stop to deny Salah following excellent work down the left from a resurgent Alberto Moreno.

The pace and directness of the Reds, and in particular Moreno, Mané and Mohamed Salah, provided the hosts with a persistent problem that needed both Rafinho, on two occasions, and Mats Hummels to resort to blatant foul means to counteract.

Liverpool doubled their lead shortly after the half hour mark when a drive from Moreno, who had just seen a free-kick well saved, was palmed into the path of Salah to head home from close range.

Goal mouth action at the other end remained virtually non existent for all of Bayern's probing, although Loris Karius had to be alert on one occasion to advance from his box and sweep up a rare dangerous through-ball.

Karius, Alexander-Arnold (Flanagan 79'), Lovren, Matip (Klavan 67'), Moreno, Henderson (Sturridge 67' (Firmino 86')), Can (Wijnaldum 45'), Coutinho (Woodburn 79'), Mané (Lallana 45'), Salah (Grujić 67'), Firmino (Kent 67')

Goals: Mané 7', Salah 34', Sturridge 83'

Unusually for pre-season, Klopp made just the two alterations at half-time. His decision probably played a part in the second half continuing in a similar vain to the opening 45 minutes.

A glut of substitutions did eventually arrive and shortly after their introductions youngsters Ryan Kent and Marko Grujić thought they had combined for number three, only for the latter to be denied by the assistant's offside flag.

Daniel Sturridge, who had already flashed one eye-catching effort narrowly wide, finally notched his first goal of an encouraging pre-season in the 83rd minute; collecting Ben Woodburn's pass and lofting the ball over Ulreich.

Unfortunately for Sturridge the strike also signalled his last involvement as the England man limped from the field.

The injury took a little gloss off an otherwise fantastic victory for the visitors who can look forward to many more such nights should they come through their Champions League play-off later this month.

Liverpool will now face Atletico Madrid, who defeated Napoli 2-1 in their Audi Cup opener, in the final on Wednesday.

The game will kick-off at 7.30pm BST and is scheduled to be broadcast live in the UK on LFC TV and ITV4.
