Liverpool: Ref Watch 16/17 - Middlesbrough (Home)

The lowdown on the man in the middle for Liverpool's hosting of Middlesbrough on Sunday...

The Premier League has announced the officiating teams who will be taking charge of top-flight fixtures during the final round of 2016/17 fixtures (Matchweek 38).

The players of Liverpool and Middlesbrough, who meet at Anfield for a 3pm BST kick-off on Sunday, May 21, will be joined on the pitch by referee Martin Atkinson.

Stuart Burt and Adam Nunn are his designated assistants, while Stuart Attwell will be patrolling the technical areas in the role of fourth official.

Liverpool have a mixed record in their two previous games overseen by Atkinson this season; winning one and losing one.

The defeat was to Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg on January 25 (no cards shown), while the victory was by virtue of a 2-1 scoreline at newly-crowned champions Chelsea on September 16 (two yellow cards shown, one to Liverpool).

Middlesbrough, meanwhile, have crossed paths with Atkinson on three occasions this term; winning 2-1 at Sunderland on August 21 (two yellow cards shown, one to Middlesbrough), losing 3-1 at home to West Ham United on January 21 (three yellow cards shown, two to Middlesbrough) and drawing 0-0 with Burnley at the Riverside on April 8 (three yellow cards shown, none to Middlesbrough).

Overall, in his 41 matches refereed in all competitions this term, the Bradford native has handed out a total of 144 yellow cards and three red.

His current yellow card average stands at 3.51-per-game, with a red card shown every 13.6 matches.

Atkinson is associated with the West Riding County Football Association and has been part of the Select Group of Premier League referees since 2005.

He was promoted to FIFA's list for European and International matches in 2006.
