Liverpool: LFC Crisis Deepens With FA Cup exit

Liverpool lose their third game in a row and with it any realistic hopes of lifting a trophy this season...

Wolverhampton Wanderers have become the third team in a little over a week to leave 'fortress Anfield' with a surprise victory, beating Liverpool 2-1 in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Championship outfit expertly followed the blueprint left by Swansea City and Southampton to book their place in round five and leave their beleaguered hosts sifting through the remnants of a once-promising season.

Paul Lambert's visitors took the lead inside the first minute through Richard Stearman, before Andreas Weimann later exposed the hosts on the counter to make it 2-0 at the interval.

Despite manager Jürgen Klopp interjecting a trio of first team regulars into proceedings during the second half, including star man Philippe Coutinho at the break, Liverpool never looked likely to recover.

With their confidence shot after a torrid run of results and performances since the turn of the year, the men in red were again alarmingly devoid of ideas and tempo.

Divock Origi briefly raised hopes of at least forcing a replay with a goal four minutes from time but, bar a blocked effort from the same player moments later, Wolves saw the game out with relative ease.

Should Liverpool lose to runaway Premier League leaders Chelsea on Tuesday night and Manchester City win at West Ham United 24 hours later, the Merseysiders will have dropped out of both domestic cup competitions and the top four in the space of a horrific eight days.

Such a scenario seemed unthinkable just a month ago when Georginio Wijnaldum's brilliant header secured a 1-0 victory over City on New Year's Eve.

The only game the Reds have won in the eight they've played since was the narrow FA Cup third round replay success over League Two minnows Plymouth Argyle on January 18.

Klopp was quick to take responsibility for the latest setback at the full-time whistle, telling broadcaster BT Sport: "We started bad and couldn't really get better. Everybody saw it, there's not a lot of good things to say about this game.

"Difficult to explain the first goal. We were obviously not ready in this moment. I have to see it again. Not good enough in the first half, second half was better of course, but it should be. Not a lot more to say, sorry.

"I'm responsible. It's not allowed to blame a single player. You learn a lot about players in this situation but it's my responsibility. 100 percent...

"We should not forget to say that Wolverhampton did really well. They had a good plan. We should have played better but we didn't, it's a fair result."
