Liverpool: Rodgers 'Delighted' To Secure Can

Brendan Rodgers has spoken in glowing terms about new signing Emre Can, who was unveiled at Melwood this afternoon...

German U21 international Emre Can is now officially a Liverpool player after finalising his move from Bayer Leverkusen.

The £9.75m deal was agreed last month but couldn't be fully completed until some outstanding documentation had been filed.

Can, who joined Bayer from Bayern Munich 12 months ago for £4.5m, was a key player at the BayArena last season, featuring 39 times in all competitions.

His performances caught the eye of a number of clubs, including Bayern who wanted him to remain with Bayer for another season before exercising a buy-back clause.

Kop boss Brendan Rodgers, who watched the 20-year-old personally on several occasions, is delighted it was Liverpool who ultimately secured Can's signature.

"Emre is an exciting young talent and I'm delighted he's chosen Liverpool for the next phase of his development and growth as a player," commented Rodgers to Liverpoolfc.com earlier today.

"He has recognised that we are a club that improves and nurtures exciting, ambitious players and I'm looking forward to seeing him take those next steps forward for us...

"We have tracked his progress for some time and I have been impressed with his attitude and qualities when I have seen him play both in the German Bundesliga and the Champions League.

"He has many of the attributes we look for; charisma on the football pitch and courage to want the ball and make things happen."

Can, who is of Turkish descent, plays primarily as a central 'box-to-box' midfielder but has also filled defensive positions during his short career to date.

Capped by Germany at U15, U16, U17, U19 and U21 level, the Frankfurt-born starlet is highly regarded in his homeland and tipped to establish himself as a senior international in the near future.

Many German footballing experts even go as far as to compare him to fellow Die Mannschaft midfielders Michael Ballack and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Speaking at his unveiling, the 20-year-old revealed: "I am proud to be a part of the family and I am looking forward to playing here. I will give it my best.

"LFC is a great club and the fans are amongst the best in the world. I am looking forward to the first game and can't wait to step on the pitch for the first time at Anfield."

Can becomes Liverpool's third major signing of the close season after Southampton pair Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert.

Vital Verdict
There were times last season when we were a little overrun in the middle of the park and hopefully Can can (no pun intended) help rectify that. Encouragingly, there appears to be a lot of different facets to his game which will serve him well in the high-intensity world of the Premier League. Can also comes with the added benefit of having Champions League experience and overall represents a very intriguing signing who will hopefully be more Philippe Coutinho than Luis Alberto on the success scale.
