Liverpool: Reds Announce Preston Friendly

As they did last summer, Liverpool will begin their preparations for the new season with a friendly against Preston North End...

Liverpool will play their first pre-season fixture of the summer against League One outfit Preston North End at Deepdale.

The friendly contest is scheduled to take place on July 19 with kick-off at 3pm BST.

The two sides also met last summer when the Merseysiders emerged victorious 4-0 courtesy of goals from Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Ibe, Raheem Sterling and Iago Aspas.

On that occasion the match was a precursor for the club's successful tour of Australia and Asia, this time around the squad will subsequently jet off to America.

There they will play a minimum of four matches, all in different locations, as the Reds meet Roma at the iconic Fenway Park in Boston before participating in the International Champions Cup tournament.

Kop boss Brendan Rodgers, who yesterday signed a new long-term contract to remain at Anfield until 2018, will be hopeful this year's tour proves equally as fruitful as the last one.

"Our tour to Asia and Australia was exceptional," commented the Northern Irishman to the Liverpool Echo. "The players worked extremely hard and I had them all together.

"It meant we arrived into the first game of the season on a real high. To win that opening game of the season against Stoke was really important. After all the good work that had gone on over the pre-season, I felt that was key for us.

"We played really well, scored one goal, should have had more and then Simon Mignolet made the penalty save at the end. You started to see the beginnings of the team spirit which served us so well this season."

Details for purchasing tickets for the game with Preston will be released via the official website over the coming days.

Additional matches are likely to be added to the schedule in due course.
