Liverpool: VL's May Player Of The Month

Liverpool: VL's May Player Of The Month

Who has won the Vital Liverpool Player of the Month award for Premier League performances during May 2014?...

Liverpool closed out their season with two final games in May knowing that defeat to Chelsea at the end of April had handed the title initiative back to Manchester City.

Even back-to-back wins would not be enough to secure the title, barring a monumental shift in goal differences, and therefore the Reds were left hoping Manuel Pellegrini's men would drop points.

Sadly it was not to be. In fact it was Liverpool who were the ones to slip up again as surprise-package Crystal Palace held them to a 3-3 draw in a dramatic game at Selhurst Park that Brendan Rodgers' side had been leading 3-0 with just 12 minutes to go.

The result made the 2-1 final day victory over Newcastle United immaterial as the Merseysiders finished second, two points behind City but two clear off third-placed Chelsea.

The five goals scored during the month came from Daniel Sturridge (2), Luis Suarez, who ended the season as the league's top scorer with 31, Joe Allen and Daniel Agger.

Martin Skrtel was again in the wrong place at the wrong time against the Magpies to record his fourth own-goal of the campaign as the defence continued to leak costly goals at regular intervals.

In total the Merseysiders were breached on 50 occasions during the season and, despite scoring 101 goals at the other end, it proved to be a decisive factor in their failure to lift a first championship in 24 years.

For the first time there is no clear Player of the Month when combining the individual Man of the Match votes, therefore, as a result of scoring in both games despite not being fully fit...

How's that work then? Sturridge wasn't in the top three for either game yet gets the vote? Sounds like a Ukrainian election to me :-)
