Liverpool: Suarez Lands FWA POTY Gong

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has scooped the Football Writers' Association Player of the Year award for 2014.

Winning the prestigious accolade, voted for by sports journalists, makes it a double for the Uruguayan after lifting the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year crown last week.

The 27-year-old won the FWA's equivalent with 52% of the vote, ahead of Anfield colleague Steven Gerrard and Manchester City's Yaya Toure.

Upon announcing the results, FWA chairman Andy Dunn, of the Sunday Mirror, commented: "Those members who have been fortunate enough to be working at a match involving Luis Suarez have witnessed an astonishing talent first-hand.

"Tireless endeavour allied to extraordinary imagination makes an irresistible combination. Add ingenious, impudent finishing and you have a footballer who truly quickens the pulse.

"Luis is a remarkable gifted addition to the long and distinguished list of winners of our award."

Suarez is rewarded after becoming the first Liverpool player to reach 30 league goals in a single campaign during the Premier League era.

His goals, and all-round endeavour, have helped the Merseysiders exceed expectations and with two games remaining Brendan Rodgers' side could still lift the title.

The Reds, who are assured of a return to the Champions League next term, are next in action tonight knowing a win against surprise package Crystal Palace will guarantee runners-up spot.

Suarez will collect his trophy from the FWA at a gala dinner to be held on May 15 in London.
