West Ham United midfielder Mohamed Diame believes Liverpool are still interested in acquiring him, two years after first showing an interest...
Senegalese international Mohamed Diame has declared his intentions to leave West Ham United and join a 'top-six side'.
The 26-year-old reportedly came close to joining Liverpool two summers ago but the move fell though when Kenny Dalglish was sacked and replaced by Brendan Rodgers.
Diame told Sky Sports at the time: "I met Kenny Dalglish and we talked about next season but God decided to finish this situation.
"It is true I was very sad in my head as I was thinking to go there, but that is OK as I think I have got other opportunities to go to another club."
Out of contract at Wigan Athletic, Diame eventually moved to Upton Park and has subsequently solidified his reputation as an effective top-level player.
So far, during his two seasons in London, the former Rayo Vallecano man has made 70 first team appearances, scoring seven goals.
Diame now believes the time is right to move on again and further his career elsewhere, saying: "Two years ago I wanted to join a team with ambitions.
"Overall, my season has been okay, although I think it is not up to last season. I started badly, but gradually I got my bearings.
"Liverpool? I can't tell you if I will be a Liverpool player next season. But I think my name is still on their wanted list.
"I don't hide it, I'm ambitious and I want to join a top-six side. I am 26 years old and it's time to take that step."
Arsenal, Aston Villa and Fulham have also been connected to the French-born midfielder recently with the Cottagers believed to have had a bid rejected in January.
The powerful presence is widely understood to have a £3.5million release clause in his existing contract which expires next summer.
Athletic, tall and committed, Diame is a solid and dependable performer who can both defend and attack in equal measure. With Champions League football on the agenda next season, Rodgers is likely to strengthen every area of the squad and therefore a move is certainly feasible. £3.5million would also represent a good deal for someone but I'm not yet 100% convinced it will be us. That said, the club were linked to a few defensive midfielders, such as Nigel De Jong, in January and it might be too early to rely on youngsters such as Conor Coady and Jordan Rossiter. If signed, Diame would hopefully enjoy a better Anfield career than Senegalese predecessors El Hadji Diouf and Salif Diao! Unfortunately he does have a heart condition which could deter some clubs from making a move.
