Liverpool: Lawro Predicts West Ham Result

Former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson looks ahead to West Ham United vs. Liverpool and attempts to predict the result...

Ex-Anfield centre-back turned media pundit Mark Lawrenson has expressed his thoughts ahead of title-chasing Liverpool's Barclays Premier League trip to mid-table West Ham United on Sunday.

The Merseysiders go into the match on the back of eight straight victories but the hosts are also in good form and have all but removed any lingering relegation concerns.

Brendan Rodgers' men, who currently sit top of the table, won the reverse fixture at Anfield in December 4-1.

Lawrenson, writing in his regular 'Lawro Predicts' column for the BBC, believes the Reds will again be victorious on this occasion but it won't be easy.

Here's what he had to say in full...

"Pessimistic Liverpool fans might look at this game and think that ex-Reds Stewart Downing and Andy Carroll will be lying in wait, and so will West Ham boss Sam Allardyce.

"The Hammers got booed off against Hull then went and won at Sunderland and now they are targeting three wins in just over a week.

"The pressure is off Allardyce's men because they have got 37 points and they are absolutely safe.

"For this game, I can see Allardyce denying Liverpool space to play and looking to hit Carroll early with the ball, then trying to get bits and pieces around him from his knockdowns.

"At the moment against Liverpool, route one might be the way to go. Aston Villa did it at Anfield in January and could have had that game sewn up by half-time.

"This will be a much tougher task for Liverpool than last week's walk in the park against Tottenham.

"Even so, good teams find a way to win games and the way the Reds are at the moment, I am backing them to win this one."

Lawro's prediction: 1-2

Lawro's opponent
Each week Lawro invites a guest to give their predictions before seeing who guesses the most scores correctly.

This week he's up against former Newcastle United and England skipper Alan Shearer.

Alan's prediction: 2-2

About this former LFC player
Mark Lawrenson joined Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion for a then club record £900k in the summer of 1981. The Republic of Ireland international centre-back soon struck up a formidable partnership with Alan Hansen after injury to club stalwart Phil Thompson. After 332 appearances, Lawrenson left the club in 1989 and after a season playing in the American Soccer League went on to manage Oxford United and Peterborough United. During his time at Anfield 'Lawro' won 5 league titles, 3 League Cups, a European Cup and an FA Cup.
