Liverpool: Ilori Close To Departing Temporarily

Well-placed reports are suggesting summer signing Tiago Ilori is on the verge of a loan move away from Anfield...

The bulk of Liverpool related transfer stories so far this month have unsurprisingly centred on potential incomings but over the past few days there have also been a number of rumours concerning the futures of existing Liverpool players.

On-loan Chelsea winger Victor Moses had been rumoured to be in danger of having his temporary switch cut short while backup striker Iago Aspas is continually linked with a move back to Spain.

The latest murmurings centre on 20-year-old centre-back Tiago Ilori leaving on loan for the rest of the season.

The Portuguese youth international, who was purchased from Sporting Lisbon during the summer for 7million, is yet to make a single senior appearance for the Merseysiders.

Ilori was amongst the substitutes for the recent FA Cup victory over Oldham Athletic but that is as close as the London-born youngster has got to first team action so far.

With established international stars Daniel Agger, Mamado Sakho, Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure all in front of him in the pecking order, a move away would come as no surprise.

According to numerous media outlets, including the Liverpool ECHO, Spanish duo Granada and Valencia are battling it out to secure a temporary four month deal.

The development is unlikely to have a bearing on Ilori's long-term prospects with Kop boss Brendan Rodgers on record recently predicting a bright future.

Speaking earlier this month, about a player he secured on transfer deadline day alongside fellow defender Sakho, Rodgers commented: "I wanted to try to protect the present and the future of the club.

"Centre-halves are so hard to find. You look at some teams and they have ageing centre-halves because it is a struggle to get a really good one. We were fortunate in that two became available, one that we had been tracking for a year in Tiago Ilori, a young talent but who can be a big talent.

"He is 6' 3", super quick, power, can jump, and he just needs to adapt to the pace and physicality of the Premier League. He is one for the future, but he can be a really big talent."

Vital Verdict
Sending Ilori out on loan clearly makes sense for all parties involved. Given the length of our pursuit and the fee paid it would represent a massive surprise, and a big error of judgement, if Ilori doesn't go on to have a good career at Liverpool. The preference would of course be to loan him out to a club in England so he can get a feel for football in this country but La Liga hardly represents a bad standard does it? Suso is doing well at Almeria and hopefully Ilori will follow suit if and when a deal is concluded.
