Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is the latest name to be heavily linked with a transfer to Anfield...
This past weekend, like most before it, was rife with players who are supposedly on their way to Liverpool.
Of course the majority of the stories are mere speculation, or in some instances pure fabrication, but one rumour which could have some foundation concerns PSV Eindhoven captain Georginio Wijnaldum.
It's no secret that Kop boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to add to his attacking options after being left frustrated by unsuccessful attempts to lure both Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Willian to Anfield over the summer.
More recently, Egyptian star Mohamed Salah had been reportedly on the verge of bringing the additional thrust and creativity which Rodgers is seemingly after.
That move is now dragging on and, given other parties are showing a keen interest in the Basle man, presumably in danger of collapse.
Wijnaldum, therefore, could be the next name on Rodgers' ever decreasing short list to fill the void.
The 23-year-old is an attacking midfielder who generally plays centrally but can also operate on the flanks; which would seemingly fit the Northern Irishman's requirements perfectly.
Despite missing the start of the season with a back injury, Wijnaldum has been in fine form of late, notching four goals in just six league appearances so far this term.
The player's career started out in the youth ranks at Sparta Rotterdam before a move to Feyenoord at the age of 14.
There, in April 2007, Wijnaldum became the club's youngest ever first team player at the age of just 16 and 148 days.
After 134 appearances and 25 goals, he moved to the Philips Stadion for €5million in June 2011.
More recently, following the retirement of Mark van Bommel and the sale of Kevin Strootman, Wijnaldum was appointed PSV's new captain and his overall record for the club currently stands at an impressive 39 goals in 105 games.
Wijnaldum has also earned three senior caps for Holland after previously featuring at U17, U19 and U21 level.
The Metro suggest a £9million bid is being prepared by the Merseysiders but it is unclear whether or not PSV would be willing to sell one of their prized assets.
Furthermore, both the player and his agent have previously stated that Wijnaldum will remain with Phillip Cocu's side until at least the end of the season.
Although the Dutch giants are believed to be close to signing Bryan Ruiz from Fulham which could increase the possibility of a deal being done.
Liverpool's managing director Ian Ayre will no doubt have a busy few weeks ahead of him and it will be a big surprise if another transfer window passes without Rodgers getting the attacking reinforcement he craves. Although the Reds are currently scoring for fun, quality options are a little limited with both Victor Moses and Iago Aspas seemingly failing to convince Rodgers of their long-term worth. Wijnaldum is a very good player and, given he is PSV's captain, he seemingly has desirable personality traits as well as physical ones. Probably not the club's first choice option but an interesting proposition especially if the Salah move doesn't work out.
