Liverpool: LFC vs. Oldham Predictions

What scorelines have Vital Liverpool and former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson plumped for ahead of the FA Cup third round?...

Ex-Anfield centre-back turned media pundit Mark Lawrenson has expressed his thoughts ahead of Liverpool's hosting of Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Merseysiders break from their pursuit of Champions League qualification to take on the League One strugglers in the third round of this season's competition.

The two famously met in the fourth round last year with the Latics causing a massive shock and knocking Liverpool out.

Writing in his regular 'Lawro Predicts' column for the BBC, the 56-year-old believes the Reds will comfortably extract revenge this time away.

Here's what he had to say in full...

"Oldham famously knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup last season but a lot has changed at the Latics since then...

"They are still at the bottom end of League One but their manager Paul Dickov has gone and Matt Smith, the big striker who scored two of their goals, has gone too.

"And, crucially, this time the tie is at Anfield, not Boundary Park."

Lawro's prediction: 3-0

Lawro's opponent
Each week Lawro invites a guest to give their predictions before seeing who guesses the most scores correctly. This week he's up against legendary FA Cup giantkiller Matthew Hanlan.

"The size of their win might depend on what side Liverpool put out but there will be no surprises at Anfield," commented the bricklayer who scored the winner when non-league Sutton United famously shocked Coventry City 25 years ago.

Matthew's prediction: 4-0

Vital Liverpool's prediction: 4-1

About this former LFC player
Mark Lawrenson joined Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion for a then club record 900k in the summer of 1981. The Republic of Ireland international centre-back soon struck up a formidable partnership with Alan Hansen after injury to club stalwart Phil Thompson. After 332 appearances, Lawrenson left the club in 1989 and after a season playing in the American Soccer League went on to manage Oxford United and Peterborough United. During his time at Anfield 'Lawro' won 5 league titles, 3 League Cups, a European Cup and an FA Cup.
