Liverpool: Lawro Predicts Man City Result

What scoreline has former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson plumped for in the latest edition of his prediction feature?...

Ex-Anfield centre-back turned media pundit Mark Lawrenson has expressed his thoughts ahead of Liverpool's visit to Manchester City on Boxing Day.

Writing in his regular 'Lawro Predicts' column for the BBC, the 56-year-old believes City will be too powerful for the Merseysiders.

Here's what he had to say in full...

"Luis Suarez has been nothing short of sensational this season and I have never seen that sort of run of form from anyone before.

"As a cynical old pro you tend to think 'well he cannot keep this up' but crikey, every goal he has scored has been a wonder goal.

"I am expecting another big performance from him at the Etihad Stadium but what I am also expecting is for Manchester City to have loads of the ball, because they always do at home.

"I just think this is the sort of game where City show not only their ability but also where their power makes a difference...

Lawro's opponent
Each week Lawro invites a guest to give their Premier League predictions before seeing who guesses the most scores correctly. This week he's up against Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray.

Guy's prediction: 3-3

"Liverpool will give as good as they get and Jordan Henderson has started to look like a real player in their midfield.

"But he will have his work cut out on Boxing Day and the City steamroller that has scored 16 goals in three games against Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham might get another outing.

"What Liverpool fans have to remember is that, even if they do only pick up a point or two from their next two games against City and Chelsea then they are still very much in the title mix.

"Brendan Rodgers' side are not going to go away. They might not always beat the absolute top teams but I would back them to beat pretty much everyone else."

Lawro's prediction: 2-0

Lawro On The Title Race
"It is that close at the top of the Premier League table that any one of four or five teams could be top by the start of the New Year. Manchester City are still my pick for the title, though.

"I think all the other managers involved see City as the team to beat - even Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said that this week.

"Liverpool? I think they can win it, but I don't think they will win it."

About this former LFC player
Mark Lawrenson joined Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion for a then club record 900k in the summer of 1981. The Republic of Ireland international centre-back soon struck up a formidable partnership with Alan Hansen after injury to club stalwart Phil Thompson. After 332 appearances, Lawrenson left the club in 1989 and after a season playing in the American Soccer League went on to manage Oxford United and Peterborough United. During his time at Anfield 'Lawro' won 5 league titles, 3 League Cups, a European Cup and an FA Cup.
