First-team coach Mike Marsh has praised numerous facets of Jordan Henderson's game including his versatility, attitude, tactical awareness and technique...
Former Liverpool midfielder Mike Marsh, who is currently a key part of the backroom staff at Anfield, believes current Reds midfielder Jordan Henderson has flourished into a key player for the club.
Marsh, who made over 60 league appearances between 1987 and 1993, knows a thing or two about the demands of playing for the Merseyside giants and is delighted Henderson has overcome a slow start to his Liverpool career.
"Jordan got off to a difficult start, which is tough when you come into a club like Liverpool," said the 44-year old to Liverpoolfc.com. "But he's found his feet after that settling-in period.
"He's always been a good player, but now that he's improved, I think he's showing just how good a player he is."
Henderson arrived from Sunderland in June 2011 but struggled initially to live up to the expectations which accompany a hefty price tag, worth upwards of £20million in his case.
Following the replacement of manager Kenny Dalglish with current incumbent Brendan Rodgers last summer, there was even speculation that the England international would be sold on at various points during the subsequent campaign.
This season, however, Henderson has started every one of Liverpool's seven Premier League fixtures and played a crucial role in his side's ascent to second in the table.
Whether in an attacking position, central midfield or, more recently, a wing-back role, the one time Coventry City loanee has delivered impressive displays that have made fans and pundits alike reassess their opinions.
The upturn in fortunes hasn't gone unnoticed in the dugout either with Marsh commenting: "Jordan has been outstanding in all the games.
"He's able to play anywhere across the line and he's played wing-back on occasions. His attitude and enthusiasm for the game is there for all to see.
"His technical and tactical qualities have shone through. He's been excellent.
"He's settled into the position really well. When he plays in the central midfield role, he's more tactically aware and when he plays in the wide role, he provides the energy up and down the lines. He's got lots of strings to his bow."
I'm certainly one of those who has been critical of Henderson in the past and I must confess to being won over so far this season. I remember writing, shortly after his arrival, a hefty piece struggling to understand why he was signed and nothing shown during those first two seasons gave me any cause to reconsider my initial assessment. This season is a different story however and Henderson almost seems a different player; full of confidence and willing to get involved and take responsibility. Every squad needs someone who can fulfil a number of positions and it is even better if that player can undertake each role to a standard where you hardly notice the regular player is missing. I've been so impressed that I'm shocked he is not currently involved in the England setup especially given Roy Hodgson took the lesser incarnation of 'Hendo' to last summer's European Championships.
