Liverpool: Gerrard Keeps LFC Expectations In Check

Liverpool: Gerrard Keeps LFC Expectations In Check

Despite an impressive start to the new season, captain Steven Gerrard believes the Reds are still aiming purely for a Champions League birth...

Liverpool's early season form has left the Merseysiders sitting second in the Premier League with only Arsenal and the matter of goals scored keeping them off top spot.

A number of impressive results and performances have also led to some notable praise from the media and supporters but Kop skipper Steven Gerrard has refused to get too carried away.

Speaking whilst away on international duty with England, the 33-year-old said: "I'd never say never about our chances of winning the Premier League title. But if I'm being honest, that's not the aim.

"The aim is for a top-four place - and to finish above Everton."

Following Tuesday night's crucial World Cup qualifier with Poland, Gerrard will return to Merseyside and begin preparations for Liverpool's trip to Newcastle United on Saturday lunch time.

Barring injury, the local-born player will make his 640th appearance for the club in a glittering career that is only missing a league championship winner's medal.

Opportunities to leave, which would have both increased Gerrard's bank balance and significantly improved his chances of adding a Premier League title to his list of honours, have come and gone.

Most notably in 2005 when he appeared all set for a British transfer record move to Chelsea after contract negotiations at Anfield broke down.

On that occasion, Gerrard performed a dramatic last minute u-turn after realising he couldn't go through with the move and leave a club he had been part of since the age of nine.

"I am the captain of my boyhood team," added the midfielder during a Three Lions press conference.

"I have a special relationship with staff and supporters. There is a bond there. I've never made decisions financially. I make them with my heart - and that's why I haven't moved on.

"My only regrets are the times I've had lows at Liverpool.

"You're letting the fans down. That's hard. You've let people down. But I find I have learned more from the lows. The feelings the fans go through at the end of a match - I feel them too.

"There's a lot at stake every time I pull on a shirt for Liverpool."
