Daniel Sturridge was on the mark in an impressive win for England but many other Liverpool stars suffered disappointment for their national teams...
Daniel Sturridge scored a late penalty as England, captained by Anfield team mate Steven Gerrard, defeated Montenegro 4-1 in their penultimate World Cup 2014 qualifier at Wembley on Friday.
An own-goal sandwiched between strikes by Wayne Rooney and Andros Townsend effectively secured the three points before Sturridge added a fourth in stoppage time.
Roy Hodgson's men stay above Ukraine by a single point and therefore victory over Poland in their final game will guarantee automatic progress to the finals.
Winger Raheem Sterling has been added to the squad for the game at Wembley on Tuesday.
One Liverpool player definitely at next summer's tournament is goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
The 25-year-old watched on from the bench as Belgium secured top spot in Group A with a 2-1 victory over Croatia in Zagreb.
Daniel Agger's chances of being there were dealt a blow by former Liverpool player Alberto Aquilani.
The midfielder scored a late equaliser as Italy snatched a 2-2 draw in Denmark.
A play-off spot, awarded to group runners-up, can still be achieved if the Danes beat Malta in their final game and other results go their way.
Fellow centre-back Martin Skrtel suffered the misfortune of conceding an own goal as Slovakia went down 1-0 to Greece in Group G.
The match had no significant meaning for Skrtel and his team mates however as their chances of reaching the World Cup were already over.
Elsewhere in Europe, recent defensive signing Mamadou Sakho was introduced at half-time and played the second 45 minutes as France cruised to an emphatic 6-0 friendly triumph over Australia at the Parc des Princes.
The French face Finland on Tuesday in their final Group I qualifier but cannot alter their second spot in the standings and therefore face a play-off.
Over in South America, Luis Suarez completed the full 90 minutes against Equador on Saturday but was unable to prevent a 1-0 defeat which leaves Uruguay also looking at a two-legged play-off tie to qualify.
Mathematically they still have a chance of clinching one of the four automatic places but it will require victory over Argentina in Montevideo on Tuesday evening and other results to help their cause.
Also on Saturday, Lucas Leiva played the final 21 minutes of Brazil's friendly against South Korea.
Luiz Felipe Scolari's side ran out 2-0 winners courtesy of goals from Barcelona star Neymar and Chelsea's Oscar.
Lucas expressed his happiness last week after returning to the international setup for the first time in almost two years.
The midfielder will be looking to win cap number 22 when next summer's World Cup hosts take on Zambia on Tuesday.
In the African section of qualifying, Victor Moses featured for the first 66 minutes as his Nigeria side took a crucial 2-1 lead from the first leg of their qualifying play-off tie with Ethiopia.
The second leg, in which Nigeria are at home, will be played on November 16.
