New Reds forward Iago Aspas has refused to set any personal scoring targets this season but wants to help the team qualify for the Champions League...
Liverpool attacker Iago Aspas might not be happy with his own showings so far in a Reds shirt but remains keen to look at the bigger picture.
The Spaniard, a £7 million summer capture from Celta Vigo, has featured in all four of Liverpool's Premier League fixtures this season but is yet to find the back of the net.
Despite not regarding himself as a natural goal scorer, four strikes in pre-season and 12 in La Liga last term indicate that Aspas certainly has the capability to contribute to the goals column.
A point which he alludes to himself in an interview with the official website published today.
"I've never been an out-and-out goal scorer," commented the 26-year-old. "But it's true that over the last three seasons I have scored quite a number of goals but my being on target isn't so important as long as the team is winning and stays at the top of the table.
"I suppose on a personal level I'm not as entirely happy as I would want to be because I still feel that I can do a lot better, but I'm working hard every day to try and improve and be able show that on the pitch to my teammates.
"I've not set myself a goals target. What I have done is aimed at playing as many games as possible and to try and help the team to get into the top four, which I think is the most important thing for us.
"It's all about focusing on the group as a whole in order to qualify for the Champions League."
The Merseysiders have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the campaign, which totals five matches including the Capital One Cup triumph over Notts County, but have been heavily dependant on Daniel Sturridge for their goals.
The former Chelsea man has six of the nine scored by the club overall and four of the five notched in the Premier League.
Aspas has predicted an 'explosive reaction' will follow when he does finally get himself off the mark.
"I think it will be a really explosive reaction as over the last four or five seasons I probably haven't gone as many games as this without a goal," added the No.9.
Aspas has so far only shown glimpses of the ability that made him a highly sought after commodity in the summer. Technically he looks very good but the pace and physicality of the Premier League has been a bit of a struggle for the diminutive striker to adapt to. Hopefully this is something he can overcome in time but the imminent return of Luis Suarez will no doubt cut into his playing minutes substantially. At it stands currently, and of course it remains early days, Aspas looks destined to be little more than a useful squad player at Anfield.
