Kop boss Brendan Rodgers has defended his decision to allow Fabio Borini to depart and claimed the move is in the best interest of all parties...
Italian forward Fabio Borini's deadline day loan switch to Sunderland raised a few eyebrows but Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is adamant the move will prove beneficial for all concerned.
In quotes published by Liverpoolfc.com today, Rodgers revealed: "It's just to get games. He had a stop-start season last year with his injuries and I just felt this year he needed to go and play football.
"With Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez, Iago Aspas and some of the other attacking players, that might have been limited."
The Northern Irishman is a known admirer of Borini after making the 22-year-old his first signing - £11million from Roma - following appointment to the Anfield dugout last summer.
Previously the pair also worked together at both Swansea City and Chelsea and Rodgers is keen to point out that the move to Wearside does not signal the end of his Liverpool career.
"I have a real belief in Fabio - he is a talent and we've seen that on occasions, but he needs to be playing regularly to demonstrate that talent," added the 40-year-old.
"We had a host of clubs wanting to take him, but with Sunderland having the Italian connection there and being a big club where he can go and play, I'm sure he'll get the chance to shine and we'll look closely at his development this year."
Meanwhile, Borini, who made 20 appearances for the Reds last season, has described the prospect of playing for the Black Cats as a 'great opportunity'.
"It feels good to make the move. I was waiting to get my time to play and I needed to play," commented the Italian international.
"This is the right place to come. It is a great opportunity for me. Playing is important for me to achieve my goals for the season."
