Liverpool: Werner hails 'Great Strategist' Rodgers
Reds chairman Tom Werner has praised the progress made during the past season and stated his excitement over the future...
Liverpool FC chairman Tom Werner has expressed his views on the club's season in an exclusive interview with the Liverpool ECHO.
The American, although acknowledging a degree of disappointment with the club's seventh place Premier League finish, painted an incredibly positive picture of the first 12 months under new manager Brendan Rodgers.
"I think Brendan has made remarkable progress," commented Werner.
"He's a great strategist and has shown strong leadership as he has led the team through this season.
"Obviously there is disappointment that we didn't finish higher in the table but the team has certainly improved as the season has gone on...
"The club is definitely moving in the right direction under Brendan."
Despite disappointing in cup competitions compared to the previous season, the league campaign did represent a nine point improvement on the eighth achieved under predecessor Kenny Dalglish in 2011-12.
The side were also much more entertaining to watch under Rodgers and surpassed the 70 goals mark in a league season for only the second time in 12 years (71).
Particularly impressive was the total of 38 scored away from Anfield; Liverpool's highest amount since 1990.
Werner also praised the signings made by the Kop boss in January and promised the owners, Fenway Sports Group, would continue to invest in new arrivals during the close season.
"To see the new additions in January, Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho, perform so well has been very positive to see," added the 63-year-old.
"Our intention is to strengthen the squad further this summer and, as owners, we're very optimistic and excited about the future."
Rodgers is already looking towards next season and a full pre-season unaffected by international commitments such as the Olympics and Euro 2012.
The players are due back at Melwood on July 2nd as the club prepares for the 2013-14 campaign with friendly matches in Norway, Indonesia, Australia and Thailand, as well as the UK.
"The end of the season gives us an opportunity to reflect and the players will need this rest mentally as much as physically," said Rodgers.
"But we will take the minimum amount of rest we can have. We will be back in very early for pre-season on July 2. I want us to be flying and super fit when we kick off.
"It will be a different pre-season this year. They will be back in at the earliest possible moment to get ready and prepare for what will hopefully be an exciting season next year."
