Liverpool: Sterling Misses U21 Euros

Liverpool: Sterling Misses U21 Euros

Reds winger Raheem Sterling is a notable absentee from England's squad for this summer's U21 European Championship...

Three Liverpool players have been named in the England U21 squad set to take part in next month's European Championship in Israel.

Anfield defender Andre Wisdom, midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and U21 captain Jordan Henderson have all been selected by coach Stuart Pearce.

Raheem Sterling however, who earlier this season made his full international debut against Sweden, misses out on the 23-man squad due to a thigh problem. His place has been filled by Wigan Athletic's Liverpool-born winger Callum McManaman.

Commenting on the Jamaican-born speedster's absence, Pearce told TheFA.com: "Raheem's had a thigh problem that he's been nursing for some time, and he's not played for Liverpool for the last six or seven weeks. It's a real disappointment because his form for the Under-21s of late has been outstanding.

"But if they're not fit, I can't pick them."

Sterling has made 36 appearences for the Merseysiders during an impressive break through season but none since a late cameo from the bench against Aston Villa in March.

There is also no place for Reds full-back Jack Robinson despite the 19-year-old featuring regularly in recent squads. Southampton's Luke Shaw and Danny Rose of Tottenham Hotspur are Pearce's preferred left-back options.

Robinson has spent the last few months on-loan at Championship outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers but despite making 11 appearances he could not prevent them from being relegated to League One.

England's campaign starts with a game against Italy on June 5th and their group also contains Norway and the hosts Israel.

The side go into the tournament with high hopes and on the back of a nine-match winning streak, compiled without even conceding a goal.

Jack Butland (Stoke City), Declan Rudd (Norwich City), Jason Steele (Middlesbrough)
