Liverpool: A View From St James'
As part of Vital Liverpool's build-up to the Premier League clash with Newcastle United we've interviewed a Magpies fan for their thoughts on the game...
Saturday's Premier League teatime encounter sees 7th placed Liverpool visit struggling Newcastle United.
The fixture may have been largely overshadowed by a ten-match violent conduct ban for Reds striker Luis Suarez but there is no ignoring how important it is to the hosts.
The Geordies currently sit 16th in the table and could end Saturday just three points above the dreaded dropzone.
So who will have the upper hand at the final whistle?
Vital Newcastle editor Mark Robson gives his opinion on the game, amongst other things, below...
Q. How has your season gone so far?
It's been a disaster really with all our fears of not strengthening in the Summer coming back to bite us on the arse. It's all self inflicted by our regime. Im not enjoying the position, the football and the lack of any positivity or ambition.
Q. What are your hopes for the rest of the campaign & where do you see yourselves finishing in the league?
Our hopes are safety. Simple as. An utter disgrace considering we could have spent some cash in the Summer window to try and get top 4 on the back of the great position we found ourselves in. Stinks of a lack of ambition and just being happy to cream the premier league riches for as little investment as possible.
Q. Who are the Newcastle players we should watch out for?
Set up with the right tactics I could reel off, Hatem Ben Arfa, Papiss Cisse, Yohan Cabaye, Cheick Tiote, Fabricio Coloccini, Sissoko and Jonas Gutierrez to name a few but with our manager in charge, we wont go for the jugular.
Q. What have you made of Liverpool so far this season?
So, so. Nowt flash but nowt poor either. The football isn't as dull or tippy tappy as what Swansea played under Brendan Rodgers but I think with the right signings in the Summer that top 6 should beckon again next year.
Q. Do you believe Brendan Rodgers will prove to be a success at Anfield?
Not a success in the mould of some former 'greats' that I've witnessed over the years by winning any major trophy but probably a success in making Liverpool an attractive team to watch.
Q. Which Liverpool player(s) do you rate the most and why?
The usual suspects I'm afraid and the first one will probably miss out on Saturday; Luis Suarez. He's like a wasp, everywhere. Pace, power, trickiness, you name it, he's got it, almost the complete striker but his 'antics' stop him being a truly great player which is a shame.
Steven Gerrard is another I rate for his workrate, passing ability, leadership, excellent positioning etc. He seems to have adopted a persona that we had in Alan Shearer where he has a certain aura. When Shearer retired it took us a good two years to get over it. I reckon the same will apply here - greats can't be replaced in a day.
Q. What is your probable line up for the game & how do you think you can be successful against Liverpool?
Difficult question as Alan Pardew always springs a surprise but i'll guess at: Elliot, Debuchy, S. Taylor, Mbiwa, Haidara, Tiote, Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Jonas, Gouffran, Cisse.
Q. If you could pick a team from both squads what would your starting X1 be?
Reina, Debuchy, Coloccini, Agger, Enrique, Tiote, Ben Arfa, Gerrard, Cabaye, Cisse, Suarez.
Q. What's your prediction for the result?
I'm sitting on the fence with a predictable 1-1, although the heart says 2-1 NUFC.
