Liverpool: The Vital LFC News Roundup

Your easy to digest news update on all things LFC. Snippets this week include Luis Suarez admiration, February awards and a proposed striker trial...

Liverpool have reportedly invited non-league striker Daniel Carr for a week-long trial with the club. The 18-year-old, a former Reading Academy player, has scored 23 goals in 23 games this season for Dulwich Hamlet who play eight leagues below the Reds in the Isthmian League Division One South.

Luis Suarez has clinched his fourth Standard Chartered Player of the Month award of the season after being voted February's star man by fans on Liverpoolfc.com. Liverpool's No.7 narrowly edged out strike partner Daniel Sturridge in a closely-contested poll, with the former picking up 33% of the total votes cast compared to 31% for Sturridge. Who won Vital Liverpool's Player Of The Month?

Suarez's hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Saturday took him to the top of the Premier League scoring charts with 21 goals and prompted a new round of praise for the forward. Winger Stewart Downing, who opened the scoring against the Latics, told broadcaster ESPN: "He must be a nightmare for defenders. He can be quiet in games and you've got to be on your toes at all times because he can score anything out of nothing. You saw that with his goals today, top quality finishes. He's been brilliant for us all season."

Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina, who also excelled at the DW Stadium, was another to voice his adulation for the Uruguayan, telling Liverpoolfc.com: "Liverpool are very lucky to have Luis. Every day I am proud to say that I share a dressing room with such a big player. He is 100 per cent all the time. He can create the chances himself from nothing. He can be a killer in the box. But he can also provide assistance to the team and be involved all the time."

The 30-year-old shot stopper has also talked of his optimism for the future and Liverpool's chances of qualifying for Champions League football next season. "This year has been important for us in terms of getting to know what the manager wants and develop the ideas… Obviously we will need some help from the board but I think the basis is well settled. We know the ideas and philosophies of the manager. It is getting better and better so hopefully we will be ready to compete."

Another Red to receive notable praise this week is retiring centre-back Jamie Carragher. In an interview with Liverpool FC Magazine, former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry described the 35-year-old as one of the toughest opponents he has ever faced. The New York Red Bulls striker explained: "Jamie's mind was very, very quick. In some ways that is an unfortunate quality to have because it is not an obvious quality… The way I saw it, especially with Jamie, is that when I was at my best and he was at his best, neither player would win and it would be up to someone else to either win or lose the match."

Reds captain Steven Gerrard's long-range strike in the 2-2 draw against Manchester City has been voted LFC's goal of the month for February. The effort gained 39% of the votes in a poll on the official club website to edge out Luis Suarez's Kop end free-kick against Zenit Saint Petersburg (36%).

Liverpool U21s battled back from a goal down to earn a draw against Southampton at St Mary's on Monday night. Alex Inglethorpe's side fell behind when Vegard Forren, linked with a move to Liverpool in January, volleyed past Peter Gulacsi on the half-hour mark. The equaliser finally arrived with just over 10 minutes remaining via Krisztian Adorjan, who nodded home a pinpoint Jonjo Shelvey cross. Liverpool U21s: Gulacsi, Roddan, Wisdom, Sama, Jones, Coady, Morgan (Dunn, 73), Teixeira, Shelvey, Suso, Adorjan.

Liverpool U18s' FA Youth Cup quarter-final against Hull City will take place at the KC Stadium on Tuesday 12th March, it has been confirmed. Jordan Ibe inspired the youngsters to a 3-1 victory over Leeds United in the last round and the last eight tie can be seen exclusively live on LFC TV and LFC TV Online. Kick-off is at 7pm and admission to the match is just £5 for adults and £1 concessions.
