Liverpool: The View From The DW

As part of Vital Liverpool's buildup to the Premier League clash with Wigan Athletic we've interviewed a Latics fan for their thoughts ahead of the game...

Saturday afternoon's match between Liverpool and Wigan at Anfield sees the teams in 13th and 14th place in the Premier League meet.

Perhaps surprisingly the Latics have a brilliant recent record in this fixture; unbeaten in five and winning at Anfield last season.

Intriguingly Wigan manager Roberto Martinez was heavily in the frame for the Kop hotseat during the summer before the club plumped for Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers.

Both men have a similar outlook on the game and are two of the brightest young managers around.

So who will have the upper hand come the final whistle?

A big thank you to Vital Wigan member Baz (worbo) for agreeing to answer the following questions for us...

Q. How has your season gone so far and where do you expect to finish?
We've been pretty much as expected and we're hanging around mid-table, that's where I'd expect us to finish the season, between 10th and 14th.

Although we have a good starting eleven, it's the quality in depth that is the problem and we can't really mix the side up too much to keep the players fresh, that also provides a problem when coping with injuries and suspensions, but I still feel we are good enough and on the right course for a mid-table end of season spot, which is excellent for us.

Q. Who are the Wigan player(s) we should look out for?
Shaun Maloney and Arouna Kone have been excellent so far this season, Maloney is our play maker and most of our attacking threat goes through him, Kone signed in summer for just short of £3 million and what a bargain he is; top striker, power, pace, strength and very direct.

Q. What have you made of Liverpool so far this season?
Liverpool look like a side that are trying to find their feet under a new system with a new boss, which is exactly what you are. I don't think Rodgers was ever going to go in and be an instant success, he needs time and I'm sure if he's given it then he'll build a good side playing attractive football that will be challenging for success.

Q. Do you believe Brendan Rodgers was the right man for the job and will prove a success long-term?
We all know who the first choice was regardless of what was put in the media, it looks like Rodgers compromised a little to get the job, something that Martinez never does, and that is one of his qualities. I'm sure though that given time your man will prove to be a success, but will he be given the time?

Q. Which Liverpool player(s) do you rate the most and why?
The man we love to hate, Luis Suarez, a class player and for all everyone (outside of Liverpool) moans about him, we'd all love him in our side. Top quality player, truly world class and can win you games by himself.

Q. What is your probable line up for the game and how do you think you can be successful against Liverpool?
All depends whether James McArthur has recovered from injury, if not Ben Watson will keep his place in midfield.

(3-5-2) Al Habsi, Ramis, Caldwell, Figueroa, Boyce, Beausejour, McCarthy, McArthur/Watson, Maloney, Kone, Di Santo.

Q. What's your prediction for the result?
Tough one, my head keeps saying 1-1 but my heart has a sneaky feeling, because we are better away than at home, that it'll be a 2-1 Latics win.
