John Terry New England Skipper

Chelsea skipper John Terry has been appointed as England's new captain. Terry takes over the armband from David Beckham who stepped down at the end of the World Cup.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, also tipped for the job, has been appointed vice-captain.

Terry, 25 and capped 29 times, has helped Chelsea win two consecutive Premier League titles and established himself with England as a first-choice central defender.

Terry said: 'It is the ultimate honour to be the captain of your country and I am very proud to be given this great opportunity. It is an incredible challenge and one I am looking forward to very much.'

New vice-captain Steven Gerrard said: 'I would like to congratulate John on being appointed England captain. I'm sure he'll do a great job.'

England coach Steve McClaren said: 'Choosing a captain is one of the most important decisions a coach has to make.

'I'm certain I've got the right man in John Terry. I'm convinced he will prove to be one of the best captains England has ever had.'

Terry's first game as captain is a friendly against European champions Greece in Manchester next Wednesday.

Although we at Vital Liverpool feel that Gerrard would have been the better option, John Terry is still a very good choice and we wish him well in his new role.

Im a Liverpool fan and i would have liked to see StevieG get the captaincy for his own personal pride. However, John Terry is fantastic player and a model professional so congratulations to him.

its stupid because if you look at what stevie has done for the reds, its far more important than what terry has done.

Aamir..... I totally agree....Gerard is a much more vocal captain and would be a much better choice than Terry, Terry is a dirty player and not a good role model at all, USA really are boring BUG*ER off.

Garrad should have been given the armband....a far better and more influential manager!

I notice McClaren wasn't asking Gerrard to get the team up during the World Cup. Gerrard can inspire a team with his performance on the pitch and will continue to do so as Vice Captain, but JT is the man!

Lets have it right Mickeys - this aint a Chelsea v Liverpool thing much as you tried to hype it up as one - its not. Its about who is the best Captain for England. Steve McLaren knows a lot about football - he is the England Manager! You may not agree with his decision, but its his decision, and it just shows the bitterness and poor sportsmanship of you lot that you refuse to accept it, and get behind John Terry as the Captain of England. Your whinging wont change his decision, so why dont you get behind him and support England? Too bitter and obsessed with Chelsea thats your problem, and it creates dissent in the ranks of England support - but as long as you get your anti-Chelsea bile of your chest that doesnt matter eh? Pathetic.

Although I am a diehard Liverpool fan, I have to say that I think Terry is the right choice for England captain. Although Gerrard is a fantastic captain and probably the most important individual player in any of the premiership teams, (and will go down in history as a true great) I think McClaren has made the right choice. Gerrard's style of captaincy is markedly different to Terry's....Gerrard leads by example and this raises the performance of the team by his own drive-a 'roy of the rovers' type figure. I don't believe this is something England need right now.....with the exception of Maradona's Argentina, the best national teams thrive on teamwork. England need an organiser who can see the whole of the game in front of him, and Terry fits the bill perfectly. The best thing McClaren can do now is place Gerrard in a midfield that works, rather than giving him the cpataincy and the added pressure of marking him as England's saviour (which is what Sven did with Beckham). Best of luck to Terry, McClarens made a good choice and I hope things get better under him....after all Sven made a complete balls up of it. To Euro 2008!!!

Fair play to you Horhey - we've had our disagreements but I take my hat off to you - the important thing is to get behind the team, and this means the Captain as well - regardless of who it is. I would have supported Gerrard in the role - he is an awesome player, and no doubt an inspirational skipper for Liverpool.

How can you speak with authority and give it the Big Billy Bold Bo**ocks on our site, mouthing off, if you havent even been to Anfield. If you can afford a 50 inch telly, then 30-odd quid for a ticket to Anfield should be a no-brainer, right?

Are you sure you want to continue establishing that you are a no-mark, so-called "fan" who seems to have a great deal of money, but claims he hasnt got the money to go to see his beloved team, yet give it the big one as if he'd been a season ticket holder for decades? Liverpool runs in your family - big deal. It runs in lots of people's families. Another nothing fan, with nothing original or sensible to contribute to a debate, just another gloryhunting bandwagon jumper spewing anti-Chelsea rubbish because the other guys on the site do and you hope it gives you some credibility. It doesnt Aamir - you dont even really hate us, you just do because its cool to hate us - you just come out with the same old ill-thought out rubbish and propaganda, that youve seen from all the other no-mark nothings that follow Liverpool. Get some originality mate - go to a few games, learn the songs, experience the atmosphere, and then you can talk about being a true Kopite.

OLASAL-Unlike chelsea, Liverpool FC is a global phenomenom with millions of fans worldwide. Many of these fans can only dream of one day seeing a match at Anfield but in a lot of cases it is just not possible for them to do so. So we don't judge our supporters based on the amount of times they've been to the ground. We welcome these supporters and consider their opinions to be no less valid then a regular matchgoer. Aamir is obviously a passionate Red fan and thats good enough for me.

I think the bigger MAN would leave the argument where it is and get on with other post's (he is a kid after all, but is still entitled to his opinions). Whats more now that JT is the captain it means two things to me anyway. 1. We have an excellent captain for England and congratulations and good luck. 2. Commiserations Stevie you probably wanted that more than we know, but now (rather selfishly from my point of view) it means you can concentrate fully on the captaincy of Liverpool and hopefully in the not to distant future lead us to the Premiership title fully focused. Lets have a good'en tomorrow, got my ticket...LETS AVE IT!!!!
