Liverpool: Defensive And On The Defensive

Rafa has leapt to the defence of under fire Liverpool captain Stevie Gerrard and also gone on the defensive against Wigan owner Dave Whelan. The Reds Boss doesn't think that Stevie, even though it looked pretty clear I must admit, has anything to worry about as he doesn't think the V-sign was made to Andre Marriner, as Rafa explained:

'Sometimes you move your fingers. It was nothing. We are not considering it, it was nothing.

'All the players know they have to behave on the pitch. I was more worried about the silly fouls we were giving to Wigan.'

In my honest opinion it did look fairly blatant that the Reds captain was sticking his fingers up at the referee and if that was just him "moving his fingers" I've got to say that he moved them in a funny way and in a funny direction. The Football Association isn't going to be taking any further action however as Marriner didn't report this to the FA, even though he did see it but he didn't think this was worthy of reporting.

The Spaniard has also hit back at Wigan chairman Whelan, who was critical of Liverpool after Wigan's win and said we were "in a mess" under the American ownership of Dumb and Dumber, telling him to mind his own business, adding:

'I do not know what is going on. I do not talk about Wigan. I prefer to concentrate on my team. He (Whelan) should talk about his own club.'

In some ways Whelan is right, things are a mess under Dumb and Dumber (not that we can blame them for everything though, just most things) but at the same time Rafa is also right that it's most likely best for Whelan to worry about Wigan and let us worry about Liverpool.

IMHO, even though I'm happy that he has, I think Stevie's been lucky to escape without punishment for his V-sign gesture at the referee.

It was a V for Victory sign to show that Liverpool will win all their remaining games and get into the CL. Gerrard just got mixed up.
