'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Wigan 1 - 0 Liverpool

Try as hard as i might, I can't be really angry about last night. Why should I? If those highly paid 'footballers' representing us out on that pitch couldn't give a toss, then why should I?

Of a season of low points, last night plumbed new depths.

Liverpool are, were, horrific. There were so many individual performances that stunk the place out last night. Carragher, Insua, Gerrard, Kuyt, Benayoun and Torres. The remainder were just awful. It was yet another game of soulless, lifeless football. The ball is played back and forth between our holding midfielders until someone decides to look up, then pass it back to a defender who hoofs it aimlessly forward. Repeat.

There have been a number of low points this season, losing the opening game after playing so poorly, losing at home to Villa. Beachball goals. Capitulating at home to Lyon, conceding a last minute goal away to Lyon after dominating the game. Turgid displays at Fulham and Portsmouth. Not being able to muster a single chance after going behind at home to Arsenal. Injuries. Lots of them. Losing Gerrard, Yossi and Torres on the night we lost to Reading in the cup. Loads more.

This was the worst though.

Lets look at the people responsible.

Carragher - He has been muck all season. Aimless hoofed balls are now his trademark instead of valiant defending which used to be the case. A great servant of our club. You wouldn't be bothered if you had to leave next season? Well me neither presently.

Insua - A young player who has apparently regressed since bursting onto the first team. Certainly not a write off but he has got to stop making ordinary right wingers look like World players of the year.

Gerrard - He has been muck all season also. Additionally he has also earned enough credit points over the years. Something is not right with our captain and presently he doesn't deserve a place in the starting line up. Ordinary which is the worst thing you can say about him.

Kuyt - Tireless worker etc etc. Doesn't have the requisite quality to be a shoe in starter as he is every week. His lack of pace and inability to extend the opposition full backs means he always cuts back and usually slows down our play. A squad player. One can only wonder what Babel may achieve if he was given the multitude of chances Kuyt has been.

Benayoun - Started the season well but hasn't had a good game since he scored a treble back in September. Realise he has been injured and the season has been stop start but he needs to raise it and quick, or else that offer from Russia should be accepted.

Torres - He had a stinker, everyone has them. Forgiven already.

Benitez - Rafa now appears to be hostage to the system that served us so well last season. We need to mix it up a bit. I am sick of seeing two holding midfielders and Gerrard should certainly never be one of them. Mascherano and Lucas are too similar and neither has the ability to play really progressively. We are far to slow in attack and allow teams to much time to set up so we can't break them down. This is the manager's fault. We need to be able to mix our style to suit who we play, not adopt the same approach away to Arsenal as at home to Reading. I really think this is the end of the road for Rafa as he has lost a large percentage of the crowd with our current style of play. I will always love the man and i hope when he does leave, it will be to other shores.

'When you walk through a storm'. Well we have been walking through one all season. I keep on thinking it is going to end but it doesn't. I have absolutely no confidence in us finishing in fourth place this year. I bear no animosity to any of the other contenders and they all deserve their place more than us presently. If any of them had put a decent run together, they would have been out of sight by now. Liverpool were there for the taking this season. No excuses.

Without 4th place, the owners business plan goes right out the window. As a result we will see one of two things. They will asset strip the club to address the shortfall of revenue from the Champion's League or they will sell up. We should all pray they go.

Oh yeah, well done Wigan. Thoroughly deserved.

Rafa must not be allowed to leave the country, let alone Liverpool. I hope that if Liverpool make the grave mistake of sacking him that he ends up in charge of a club like Arsenal or Chelsea and demonstrates his genius once again!
refereesfavourbig4
This genius being the same one that has overseen him finish above you in every single season he has been here? That one?
KB1
I hope Rafa never leaves Liverpool either if that means he's gonna end up at Chelsea!!! LOL, hard luck lads, Wigan gave us a hiding at the start of the season too. That said, I commend the KB1 for his brutal honesty regarding this particular team. Muck indeed.

from a wigan fan i cant believe how bad Liverpool played no doubt you will bounce back though

I'm pretty certain that if Rafa were to leave liverpool, there'd be no massive rush for his signature within the premier league. Surely he'll just take the Juve job. That way everyody saves face as no one needs to get fired or quit.
tuscan3000
There may not be in the Premier League Tuscan, as he patently isn't rated here (outside of LFC fans obviously), however practically every vacant top job in Europe would be offered to him. Juve, both Milan sides, Madrid, Bayern - all teams that have been seriously interested in the last few years.
KB1
I expected more from Liverpool at the DW Stadium but I am so pleased with the result, being a Wigan fan. I'm sure Liverpool will finish 4th. There's not much in it and plenty of twists and turns to come yet. Keep the faith!

Looks like Rafa is losing the fans...http://is.gd/a3WN9

Don't think anyone could make a silk purse out of the sows ear that the Liverpool squad so clearly is at the moment. If the yanks had given him more money in the summer things could have been quite different. And as for selling Alonso? DOH! I suspect a quiet and dignified parting of the ways for Rafa and Liverpool in the summer
fifthcolumnblue
I agree with you KB1. There'll be clubs that are interested in the summer - probably not the ones you've mentioned (apart from Juve) as most of them have moved on, but he is obviously still highly regarded. If you guys could get hiddink or mourinho in you'd be a different prospect overnight. I've not watched enough of your games to completely dismiss Rafas ability, but I think I could win more games than I lose in the premier league playing 2 defensive midfielders behind Gerrard and Torres with Pepe Reina in goal. With a decent manager and a few half decent squad players you'll finish higher next season.
tuscan3000
I dont think Gerrard,Kuyt,Benyoun & Jamie deserve the abuse you're giving them along with Torres. Those are the few who play for the shirt.Rafa's negative tactics are to blame. You're a top 4 side feck having 2 holding mids. Not to worry guys the top 4 hasnt been broken for years & it still wont, what has changed?! Villa etc. will all choke.
Chelsea24/7
Keep Talking chelsea24/7...You are the guys who are gonna choke...Man U will win the league, not your pimp squad..And Arsenal not far behind...
Daz Hotspurs
It wasn't good and sometimes, like KB has, you have to hit out at some people. They say that sometimes the truth hurts, now let's see them respond and put things right! But how many times have we had to say that this season?
