Liverpool: Rafa's Views On Win Over Wigan

Rafa's Views On Win Over Wigan

Once again Liverpool came from behind to win a match, doing so against Wigan (twice) on Saturday to win 3-2. Rafa Benitez feels that the Reds were worth there win overall against a very good Wigan side that I admit were a little unlucky to lose on the day, Rafa told Sky Sports:

'I think if you analyse the whole game we were playing well, but when we were playing better we conceded the second goal.

'In the second half it was just one way, we were attacking, attacking.

'It was just a question of time, but we have strong players who believed we would keep creating and score.'

The sending off of Antonio Valencia was a clear turning point in the match, but although Rafa has some sympathy for the Ecuadorian with his first yellow card (which was more than a tad harsh) the Spaniard felt that the second foul on Xabi Alonso was worthy of a straight red card on its own, he added:

'Maybe we kicked the ball and it was our fault more than them. But the second one, for me, was a straight red card. It was a very dangerous tackle.'

Daniel Agger, who came in for the injured Martin Skrtel, didn't start his day very well and his chance to impress didn't get off to a good start. After being at fault for the first Wigan goal the Dane responded by playing his part in our first equaliser, which gained praise from Rafa, who also added:

'(Andrea) Dossena was available and Reina tried to play with Agger, who was not watching and tried to dribble it and it was mistake.

'But he showed character when he ran forward with the ball for the assist for the first goal.'

All in all I think that we probably did deserve the win as we created far more chances, but failed to convert a lot of them. Former Reds goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was definitely the busier of the two 'keepers, but credit must be given to Wigan who will still feel aggrieved to go away from Anfield with nothing.

Reina was as much to blame as agger, maybe more so. But he showed what a quality player he is by making the equaliser. He'll over come this because he is a strong character, and because we won! Thank God!!

Also we really need to get our defense sorted out we're conceding too many goals. A nice clean sheet against Ath Madrid and Chelsea will do fine lol!

Deserve the win...? Pull the other one, mate! Aggrieved doesn't even begin to describe how Wigan fans, including myself, must feel. And a 'little unlucky?' Daylight robbery, more like. You can count yourselves ruddy lucky this weekend.

robin, Your first goal was a defensive mistake, your second was a great strike by Zaki. Kirkland made a couple of great saves on Kuyt, Valencia's foul on Alonso could've been a straight red on it's own, even Charlie Nicholas, not a great fan of Liverpool, thought so. We weren't that lucky.

I think we were lucky in a sense that we played bad and still managed to win! Which is always good if we want to compete, but we cannot be giving teams head starts week in and out, your right JD, it was a horrible tackle!! (another one on Xabi) thats 4 out of our last 5 games that the opposition have had men sent off for tackles on Xabi. Vidic, Cahill, Zabeyleta and now Valencia, is he a marked man??
Eusebio
Why were we lucky? More chances, which we kept missing or had saved by Kirkland, it was only a matter of time before we did break through again. They might have been late goals, but were any of them lucky goals? Didn't think so!

Tell you what, can we pick the ref to be on our side next time, we get to foul you unchecked, you can play with 10 men and you won't mind us taking our free kicks a few times will you..............

I never had Wigan fans down as bitter but some of you are sounding just that.

Aamir, have your American owners banned the use of irony (that's an attempt at humour again). Good luck on Wednesday night (that's not).

They probably have, the control-freak bastids!
